FierceHealthcare names Gauss Surgical as one of its 2019 “Fierce 15” Companies
Menlo Park, CA – January 8, 2019 – Gauss Surgical today announced that it has been named by FierceHealthcare as one of the 2019 Fierce 15 companies, designating it as one of the most promising healthcare companies in the industry.
Gauss Surgical is an AI-driven healthcare technology company that is evolving the delivery model for medical devices and services in hospitals. The company's flagship product, Triton, monitors surgical blood loss in real time using digital imaging and machine learning on the iPad. It has received De Novo clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a European CE mark. It is in increasingly widespread use in hospitals across the United States; so far, Triton has been adopted by 50 hospitals which perform more than 200,000 infant deliveries each year.
Doctors have traditionally relied on their own subjective visual estimates of blood loss by eyeballing blood-containing materials in the surgical field, a practice that is notoriously inaccurate. Attempts to weigh sponges are often confounded by the presence of other fluids such as amniotic fluid or irrigation. Triton captures rapid scans of blood-containing sponges and canisters and uses computer vision and machine learning to estimate blood loss with significantly higher accuracy and precision.
“We are honored to be identified by FierceHealthcare as a healthcare technology game changer,” said Siddarth Satish, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Gauss. “The monitoring and measurement of blood loss during surgery – including labor and delivery - is a space that has remained behind the times in terms of advancement and improvement. Our vision goes beyond creating just one medical technology product - we believe the thoughtful integration of AI will revolutionize operating rooms and hospitals and we intend to drive that transformation.”
The Fierce 15 celebrates the spirit of being “fierce” – championing innovation and creativity, even in the face of intense competition. This is FierceHealthcare’s first annual Fierce 15 selection.

Using computer vision and machine learning algorithms, Triton estimates blood loss in real time by analyzing images of surgical sponges and canisters taken with an iPad in the operating room. Triton has demonstrated that accurate, real time estimation of blood loss may lead to early recognition of hemorrhage, reduced blood transfusions and shortened length of stay for patients. Triton is FDA cleared and CE marked and has been adopted by 50 hospitals in the US. Triton received a 2018 Apple Design Award, which recognizes the best in design, innovation and technology on Apple platforms.
